Pyramids of the World

A slideshow of pyramids from around the world, ancient and modern, set to Bethoven's 3rd Symphony (Eroica). Very splendid many of them are too. Egyptian pyramids were primarily tombs or cenotaphs for pharaohs. The oldest is the step pyramid of Djoser, whose architect Imhotep was later deified. The pyramid building art reached its peak with the Great Pyramid of Giza, built by Khufu (reigned c. 2589-2566). This pyramid is unique in having passages and chambers in its superstructure. Most others were solid, with a passage leading down to an underground/ground level chamber. Later Egyptian pyramids were built less solidly, with a rubble and mun-brick infill. When robbed of their casing stones they subdequentlt crumbled into the sorry piles seen here. Royal pyramids were no longer built after the start of the New Kingdom, though smaller, steep-sided pyramids sometimes adorned private tombs. This type seems to have most inspired the Cushite rulers who revived the tradition for their own mausoleums.
Elsewhere in the world pyramid structures were more usually built as temples. As old as the Egyptian pyramids are the fortress-like Ziggurats of Iraq and Iran. Remarkably similar to these are some of the Hindu and Buddhist temples of the far east, and the bloodsoaked edifices of central and south America. There are no clear connections between these old and new-world cultures, and the similarities between their monuments seems to be coincidental. The pyramid-building tradition in south America, first manifested at Caral, seems to be as old as Egypt's.

First pyramids where called ziggurats.The Mesopotamians built the earliest pyramidal structures, called ziggurats.ziggurat was a pyramidal structure with a flat top.A number of Mesoamerican cultures also built pyramid-shaped structures. Mesoamerican pyramids were usually stepped, with temples on top, more similar to the Mesopotamian ziggurat than the Egyptian pyramid. Go to this it tells you all about pyramids Prove me wrong
