I work as Recording Engineer at Hill Street Studios (www.hillstreetstudios.co.nz). We had some new mics come in yesterday so I did this test recording. The strat was plugged into my old Marshall JMP50 amp through a Marshall 2x12 loaded with Celestion G12-65 speakers. I used a Maxon SD9 as a boost.

The cab was close mic'd with a Heil PR30 and I used the Brauner Phantera as an ambient room mic. The mic pre was a Chandler TG-2.

Here's a couple of recording pics:

  • The Chandler TG-2 was cloned after the same EMI pres built for Abbey Road studios. Same sound as The Beatles Abbey Road album and Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon.

  • good stuff, boss.

  • @donlies Thanks! Everything in the chain does its bit in colouring the tone, from the strings to the amp to the speakers to the mic pre - they all add up to give you the resulting tone. The Chandler is definitely a great preamp - one of the best for recording electric guitar imho.

  • @blackstratblues hello

    I love that sound!

Is the sound coming out of the cabinet Marschall is the same as coming out of TG2.

What does the preamp Chandler brings more to the record?

  • Thanks : )

  • I just wanna let you know how amazing your albums are, they are becoming a huge influence on me and are changing the way I think about writing music. Keep up the great work!
