"Our Place in the Cosmos", the third video from the Symphony of Science, was crafted using samples from Carl Sagan's Cosmos, Richard Dawkins' Genius of Charles Darwin series, Dawkins' TED Talk, Stephen Hawking's Universe series, Michio Kaku's interview on Physics and aliens, plus added visuals from Baraka, Koyaanisqatsi, History Channel's Universe series, and IMAX Cosmic Voyage. The themes present in this song are intended to explore our understanding of our origins within the universe, and to challenge the commonplace notion that humans have a superior or privleged position, both on our home planet and in the universe itself.

RIP Dr. Sagan and Dr. Jastrow!

Lyrics:

[Narrator]
With every century
Our eyes on the universe have been opened anew
We are witness
To the very brink of time and space

[Robert Jastrow]
We must ask ourselves
We who are so proud of our accomplishments
What is our place in the cosmic perspective of life?

[Carl Sagan]
The exploration of the cosmos
Is a voyage of self discovery
As long as there have been humans
We have searched for our place in the cosmos

[Richard Dawkins]
Are there things about the universe
That will be forever beyond our grasp?
Are there things about the universe that are
Ungraspable?

[Sagan]
One of the great revelations of space exploration
Is the image of the earth, finite and lonely
Bearing the entire human species
Through the oceans of space and time

[Dawkins]
Matter flows from place to place
And momentarily comes together to be you
Some people find that thought disturbing
I find the reality thrilling

[Sagan]
As the ancient mythmakers knew
We're children equally of the earth and the sky
In our tenure on this planet, we've accumulated
Dangerous evolutionary baggage

We've also acquired compassion for others,
Love for our children,
And a great soaring passionate intelligence
The clear tools for our continued survival

[Michio Kaku]
We could be in the middle
Of an inter-galactic conversation
And we wouldn't even know

[Sagan]
We've begun at last
To wonder about our origins
Star stuff contemplating the stars
Tracing that long path

Our obligation to survive and flourish
Is owed not just to ourselves
But also to that cosmos
Ancient and vast, from which we spring

  • the beginning sounds like porn music

  • @13rupert93 Unless his own characteristics are completely illogical. which they are.Ever see that south park episode? This is actually a good example. Flying spaghetti monster. Thats illogical, based on its characteristics. I suppose that doesnt prove it non-existent, it just proves him highly improbable.

  • @13rupert93 1) We can prove a negative. I can prove I'm not a banana. Universal negatives are what you may be speaking of. 2) You can prove that "he" does not exists based only on "his" characteristics if those characteristics conflict with eachother. I can't be a yellow banana and be completely green too (just an example).

  • @rockoman100 nope. technically you could disprove him with science (except you can't prove a negitive) but you can't disprove him with his own characteristics

  • @13rupert93 Lol so...to prove he doesnt exist he has to exist. Sweet logic there. I dont 100% discount the possibility of a god though. But quite frankly, what im trying to say is it doesnt make sense. and in the wise (ish) words of judge judy "if it doesnt make sense it aint true"

  • Fonky beat. Nice to see such range! :)

  • @rockoman100 Typical atheist, refuses to answer the moral argument, or the first cause argument. Instead you attack the characteristics of God, which you don't believe. You can't you the characteristics of a being to disprove its existence, for if Gods character to have any effect on the argument, he must exist, and you don't belief he does.

  • God answers nothing. I can sit here and think of the origins of the universe, but a religious person will say "oh it was god". The reason that doesn't answer anything is this: Where did god come from? See, the bible says god "has always been", and hasn't come from anything. But I could say the same thing about our universe and it would be quite obvious that I'm wrong. Just because we don't know the answers to these things yet doesn't mean you should automatically default to your 3000 year old p

  • The scene of the spaceshuttle at 3:29 just gives me the chills.

  • @MCgt1 This is why you're an idiot. You know not of who writes the book that you align your life to. Even your religion says that this GOD of yours does not give knowledge, he gave free will, so Humans find knowledge themselves without help from him. And don't press your religion onto other people, They don't want to & will not believe in what you believe. You are free to live as your book tells you to, but that book has been changed every day for the last 3000 years. Don't believe in all of it.
