For my ASL class midterm 2011 =)

What I'm signing in English:
How can a hearing person fit into the deaf community and culture?
They have many choices. They could learn asl, become an interpreter or have a deaf friend or family member.

Many hearing people think being deaf is a bad thing, but they just need to be educated.

I fit into the deaf community by learning asl for three semesters.
I have learned many things and think deaf culture is fascinating.

In asl level 1 I learned:
When you introduce to a deaf person you tell them your name, your school, your teachers name and if you are deaf or hearing.

If two deaf people are talking it's okay to walk between them.

Sign names are very important in deaf culture. A deaf person gives you your sign name. You become closer to the deaf community that way. my sign name is "cool"

The book "For Hearing People Only" has taught me a great deal, like flashing lights are used for telephone calls, doorbells, and emergency light flashes.

In asl level 2 I learned:
If you want a deaf persons attention snapping your fingers at them is wrong. Touching them is okay.

Hearing people want to have personal space during a conversation but deaf people are more up close and personal.

In my 2nd semester I went to my first deaf event. My friend Gina and I went to Deaf BINGO. We were nervous to make mistakes but everyone was nice and signed slow.

My best experience was going to the protest in Albany. The government was trying to close down deaf schools. We all protested against it. We heard many touching stories and met a lot of deaf people. They were all happy to have our support.

In asl level 3 I learned

about deaf technology. Example closed captioning, video relay, CI implant and hearing aids.

We learned about conversation differences.
Registers
Formal conversation has one speaker, no questions asked, no turn taking. Example lecture.

Informal conversation has turn taking, some questions asked. Example friends talking.

Consultative conversation is when someone is an expert of a certain topic. Example a teacher talking to a student.

Intimate conversation. People who are close to one another.

We learned asl Styles

conversational is social talk

Technical is science and medicine talk

Aesthetic is love, beauty and emotion talk

Most important I have become comfortable signing.

Now I am proud to sign. My friends and family will ask me how to sign so I try to teach them.

The book "The Mask Of Benevolence" says deaf people think that hearing people can never completely fit into the deaf community. I agree but I am happy to fit in a little bit.
