The book "Soldiers of Misfortune," by James Sanders, tells the story of some 25,000 US POW's liberated from German camps in 1945 by the Red Army. Most were airman. They, as well as thousands of British airman, went into a Communist gulag captivity far worse than what they endured by the Germans. Not a single one ever returned home. They were all worked to death in Russia. No US President ever tried to obtain their release. Mega-blowback & unintended consequences for these aerial butchers.
