A four-year old learns how to hold the violin with the correct placement of her thumb and fingers for an "Old Russian School" hand position. This is a position where the violin is balanced on the collarbone without a shoulder rest and the violin neck is balanced on the thumb, which is used as a fulcrum with the second finger.
