Medicine Buddha Empowerment, Orlando, April 2008

And it came to pass that, according to a sutra, "thus I have heard, one time ..." well let me paraphrase as follows: Manjushri, when he was just a Bodhisattva, asked the Buddha Sakyamuni, who was about to give a teaching to thousands of bodhisattvas, what could be helpful to people living in the rat race of the 21st century where folks are in a hurry to get to work and so they have to go through the FatFry King drive-through to get a quadruple supersized fistful of ground beef stuck between buns, fries, and a tall drink made up of sugar, carbonated water and caramel coloring with enough caffeine to get through the day, and then have to go to the gym after work to run and get nowhere, and wonder why the country he lives in is blamed for consuming so much of the planet's resources. Well Manjushri didn't say it like that, because the people listening to the story when it was first spoken and eventually written down to form a sutra, would not have understood a word and so would not have been able to remember the story. So he simplified his clairvoyant vision of the future and just said, more or less, Please Buddha, tell me what would be most beneficial to people in the future when Buddha Dharma would be in decline (that is us he is talking about). And the Buddha basically said that he knew of an up and coming bodhisattva who would become the great Buddha Doctor, whose only thought is of healing the world of all its problems, and that if we folks in the 21st century (or any century and place) would look at him, and say his name, we would be healed and we would be able to heal others. So that is what the Medicine Buddha Empowerment is all about. So I was fortunate enough to be there and get the Tibetan Lama, the Drupon Thinley Ningpo Rinpoche, born in Tibet, now living in Maryland, to come visit us in Orlando, FL and grant us the empowerment and give teachings on it.
