Regina Spektor singing "Dance Anthem of the 80s".

February 15, 2003.

This version of Dance Anthem is also one of Regina's earliest, with a slower tempo (and no synthesized piano for the "solo") than most of the later performances.

--

You are so sweet
Dancing to that beat

There's a meat market down the street
The boys and the girls watch each other eat

You are so sweet, so sweet
Dancing and moving to that beat, that beat

There's a meat market down the street
The boys and girls watch each other eat
The boys and the girls watch each other eat
When they really just wanna watch each other
Sleep
They want to watch, to watch each other
Sleep, sleep sleep
Sleep
They want to watch, to watch each other
Sleep, sleep, sleep

You are so sweet
You are so sweet

(Her solo)

I am walking through the city
Like a drunk, but not
With my slip showing a little
Like a drunk, but not
And I am one of your people
But the cars don't stop
And I am one of your people
But the cars don't stop
And it's been a long time since before I've been touched
Now I'm getting touched all the time
And it's only a matter of whom
And it's only a matter of when

An addiction to hands and feet
There's a meat market down the street
The boys and girls watch each other eat
When they really just wanna watch each other sleep
An addiction to hands and feet
There's a meat market down the street
The boys and girls watch each other eat
When they really just wanna watch each other

Sleep
They want to watch, to watch each other
Sleep, sleep, sleep
Sleep
They want to watch, to watch each other
Sleep, sleep, sleep

They want to watch, to watch each other
They want to be watched, they want to be washed
They want to be touched, to touch each other
They want to sleep, they want to be slept
They want to watch, to watch each other
They want to be watched, they want to be washed
They want to be touched, to touch each other
They want to sleep, they want to be slept
They want to watch, to watch each other
They want to be watched, they want to be washed
They want to be touched, to touch each other
They want to sleep, they want to be slept
They want to watch, to watch each other
They want to watch, they want to be watched
To watch each other, to watch each other
To watch each other...

Watch each other
Watch each other
Watch each other
Watch each other
Watch each other
Watch each other...

  • Ah man, I wish she still filled her albums with her New York accent in her singingggg!

  • Same! She "tones it down" for the album version of this song. :P

  • This is the version I fell in love with and listened to billion of times, but I also love the new faster album version :)

regina, you never cease to amaze me. You ARE the 5th Beatle

  • Same here, I enjoy the album version as much as this one pretty much. I love what she did with it for the album.

  • I like the slower tempo in this version. Do you know where she was?

  • Me too. She sung this one at the C-Note venue in NYC about a year before the place closed down.

  • This song makes me cry every time I listen to it. It stirs something deep inside my soul that i've lost touch with over the years. It hurts my body, but I can't get enough of it at the same time. Confused? Me too.

  • So my favourite song has existed since I was at least 9-years-old?

  • SO AMAZING

  • So happy I found this... <3 regina <3

  • it's funny that I can recognize that one guy's laugh in a lot of these live songs :) I like it.

  • I'm not sure why she added so many effects in the album version. I think this song is great with just the piano and her voice. It's so raw.

  • I love how in the beginning people are laughing because the lyrics are clever, and cute. But after the solo it gets all quiet. Something about that part is so sad, so true.

  • i dont like this version as much... but its still beautiful ^^ i just hate whoever that guy was who kept laughing in the middle of her song >:O

  • @jealousjeans o.O that might be the paoti, not the song. :P

  • @jealousjeans i think her songs and voice just affect people that way; i feel that way about "I Found a Wallet"

  • she's so funny :D
