Early in the editing of Neither Memory Nor Magic, director Hugo Perez explored the possibility of creating animations to provide visuals for a few of the poems. Designer and animator Daniel Lagin created a mock-up animation from an illustration by a Hungarian student based on Miklos Radnoti's poem Root. It was ultimately decided that animation was too distracting and did not fit in with the texture of the film so the scene that you see here is all that remains of our experiment with animation. This poem and this animated treatment were cut from the documentary at a very early stage. Root is one of the poems written by Radnoti while he was in a forced labor camp in Zagubica, Serbia in 1944--one of his last poems and one of the poems found in the Bor Notebook.
You are right to omit this animation from the film.
