I used to have the attitude of "If it's being played, it should be heard!". But after mixing for a while I no longer keep something in the mix if I don't want it in there. If it's hurting the mix, I pull it out. However, I don't usually let personal preference dictate that. It's only if I believe something is truly detrimental to the mix that I pull it out.

Well,
Maybe from The Mixer point of view this is a good idea, however in this moment you becoming to a composer. Therefore from The Composer point of view this idea to mute the first part of the guitar playing is idiotic. We geting the melody line started from the middle (well it is melody even if this kind of "plumking" ) and it doesn't fit to the whole music and its sounds like "Oh, sh*t I forgot its my part here".
Let's remember: Music first, other stuff (mixing, aranging, mastering) next.

.. and the guitar player is going to kill you when he sees that :))

Instead of muting, how about lowering the volume of the guitar part and making it less prominent?

@adassumpcao Her name is Annie Lawrence and she sings with the worship band Aletheia. Pretty sure they haven't released this track yet, unfortunately.
