@Carthsgtr There's nothing wrong with cussing. It's just kind of that it seems out of place. We're both experienced musicians with our own understanding of music. It's not like I said something like "Jazz sucks, lol, it's the dumbest music everrrr METAL FTW" or something, you know? Now, that would be really fucking stupid!
-
And I am going to be honest with you, as much as I need to tone the language down in all aspects of my life, I don't personally feel as if there is anything wrong with it.
-
Well I think we shall have to agree to disagree.

@Carthsgtr I never said that theory is a gauge for how correct music is. Again you twisted my words that way. You seem to twist all my words, actually. Of course musicians don't choose chords just because it fits in a key. All I'm saying is that when you choose to compose in a certain style, you will be more inclined to make certain choices that are more or less theoretically compliant with that style. The construct of theory does not change because of that. You simply apply it in a certain way.
-
@Carthsgtr "So are you saying that the further away you travel from common tonality the better?" Nope, not what I'm saying at all. That's what you made of it, and you're cussing at me for it. Talking about spinning things one way or the other. Also, please stop cussing, it's not helping you.
Theory does not become a meaningless word at all. If you will, I consider it a big bucket of colours which you may or may not use, keeping in mind that music came first, then came the theory to explain it.
-
And by the way, I have played the violin for 10 years. Not a whole lot in comparison to some, but I would consider my knowledge of theory to be far above that of your average musician.
-
School of thought. Likewise, no straight jazz musician is going to simply use the major, minor and diminished triads simply because that is all that fits in to a common key.
Also, I find it rather pretentious the way in which you find "smooth jazz" to be stupid, and then attempt to contrast it with free jazz. So are you saying that the further away you travel from common tonality the better? I hate to resort to petty expletives, but that's fucking pretentious.
@MaxBGuitar You seem to seperate "jazz" and "music", and "jazz-knowledge" and other theory, when they're actually all the same. Jazz is more complex than other genres, but the theory is always the same. What jazz artists were you thinking of, by the way? Jazz is very diverse and can go from stupid simple "jazz" (smooth jazz) to seemingly having no tonality at all (free jazz). Even so, complex jazz is not something everyone's into. That doesn't mean the artists don't know what they're doing :)

@RockerforChrist1027
The thing here is, that some solid jazz players just forgot about how to play music. They just play jazz. :o
But at all: The more you know, the better. Steve Lukather is also a jazz dude, ... And at all, you can use jazz-knowledge in rock quite a lot. lol
But some jazzers really don't groove. -_- They just fool around with stuff that isn't enjoyable anymore.
