  • This is a much bigger question than this space allows, but the short version involves extensional faulting, rifting and spreading brought about by convection in the mantle and density variations in oceanic and continental crust.

  • Time to get out of the dark ages. earthquakes happen because the earth is growing and stretching

  • Yes and maybe later, the earth will do some yoga and everything will be just fine...In the meantime earthquake will occur due to the accumulation of stress in non-plastic rocks, which builds until friction is overcome and energy is released as an earthquake. Further stress is then transferred to other parts of the fault where this Couloumb stress builds again. The earth is not growing and stretching however as you suggest, and to say so is disingenuous to say the least!

  • cool, makes you wonder

  • So it's possible to comprehend the land is shifting and moving along fault lines, but it's beyond the scope of imagination that the Earth could actually be growing. Can you explain the super continent Pangea? could you also explain the mechanics of how it broke apart. I really do want someone to explain it to me

  • thats interesting
