It's just an error- he runs off as soon as the smoke is thrown, his guys wait a few seconds. luckily it worked out ok in the end.

In my opinion, a beautifully done scene. Probably one of the best in the movie. The coloring, charge, blacks and greens with the reds. Fantastic.

Winters says follow me on red smoke and takes off. It takes a few seconds to pop so he has a head start. He doesn't ever worry about whether his men are following him. It just isn't the way he is wired. btw We have recently recruited and probably badly trained German FJ, paratroopers, here. Oh, yeah, and very badly led. They revealed their position the night before and just sat there the next day.

SS got flanked by a suprise attack, so why do some people say "This is bs, SS could fight back"? They where attacked by suprise, it's not easy to fight back in a situation like that.

I think it was because Winters didnt wanna have all the men along side of him in case there was immediate danger ahead.In the smoke scenario, had winters been spotted and shot at,the other men wouldnt have been spotted and shot at as well,they would be safe behind the smoke.By the time the smoke went off,had there have been danger to the degree of canceling the charge,winters would already be running back like "lets get the eff out of here".
