Friday night, I received a suggestion that this tune could be turned into ragtime. I whipped up a basic score for it (based on an existing transcription) and showed it to Tom Brier the next day. Here is how he sight-read it. He had never heard nor seen the music before this recording.

You can view the score he is reading here: http://www.keeper1st.com/music/zeldaend.pdf

  • Ragtime always reminds me of Treno in FFIX.

  • @KvL92 I do have a video a Tom sight-reading Treno...

  • I think of all the sight-reads of video game music I've seen this guy do, this one takes the cake. He doesn't just make it seem smooth and effortless; he also keeps layering on new embellishments and making the song more and more exciting to listen to with each cycle. He winds it down gracefully, too.

I'd change my name to Ginger to be able to play like him.

  • @sirsinnes His reading of Korobeiniki from a lead sheet is perhaps even more epic, as I commented in the video itself. Check it out if you haven't already.

  • So he's basically playing from a lead sheet, right?

  • @gtorranojacobs Well, the score has a left hand written out but does have the chord names on it. Even without the names on top, I think generally he only skims the left hand parts and treats the music like a lead sheet. I do have a video of him playing from an actual lead sheet which I hold up to the camera before giving to him. Search "korobeiniki brier" and you'll find it (look for the title in Russian).

  • @s1mm3g Not necessarily "better". It's nice, but it's apples vs oranges. That is an orchestra playing a well-rehearsed arrangement. This is a solo pianist seeing the music for the first time and making up his own arrangement on the spot. Two very different things, both delightful in their own right.

  • At first I was thinking "Hey I think I can play that." But then.. shit.
