  • We went to that QPR match in 85. I was fifteen at the time. Went to Rotterdam too when we beat Rapid Vienna in the final. A few years later, I went to see Joe Strummer n The Latino Rockabilly War in Manchester. My dad picked me up afterwards cos i was only eighteen and he didn't like the idea of me being in in Manc on me own. He crashed his car on the way back to Liverpool. We were unharmed but i was so high on adrenalin from seein Joe i wasn't scared in the slightsest...

  • Now you've got me jealous, I decided I couldn't spare enough time from my studies to go to Rotterdam and Wembley. I went to Wembley but missed out on possibly the greatest night in the club's history

  • What a wonderful story Tony, thank you for sharing it.I too was really fortunate to meet the group and see the guys perform.Yes they were good people ,I feel honoured and priveleged to have met my (and still) musical heroes.Joe lived just down the road from me (Newport -South Wales) in his pre Clash and art college days, the council have put a plaque on the front of the building where Joe lived,"Joe Strummer lived here" it reads,I pass it by every day, thank you guys.

  • Thanks for telling me this, it's really good that the council have done that.

  • Thanks for the comments and yes I think Joe was a really great man.

  • It was an amazing few days, a year later one of my flatmates met Joe at the Notting Hill Carnival and, typically, Joe invited him back to his home.

  • WELL COOL,..yoou met em and did all that,..Joe's a geezer

  • Excellent video,I remember the day very well,we were in the phonographic and the clash came in and played a set,,for me it was a dream come true after spending many many clash gig in a large crowd it was great to be up close and meet them..and i got joes stetson hat in exchange for a pint!..still have the hat its the one he wears on the london calling video..my most treasured item.

still the only band that matters

  • Interesting shit(or should I say shite?). Most of my favorite bands come from '70s Britain, even though I'm a 26 year old "Yank". Rock is originally an American form of music, but British bands definitely brought rock to places it would have never gone if it would have stayed in the US.
