Video shot September 5, 2011 on the north edge of Bastrop State Park near Austin. All but about 100 acres of the 6,000-acre park have been blackened by fire. Firefighters have been battling blazes for 3 days. At this point, historic CCC buildings are still intact. For more information, see http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/

Hi I'm a Firefigther for Magnolia, TX. I'm explaining how it we work. Notice that there are no structures to protect, therefor the fire does not need to be stopped BECAUSE, if you extinguish the fire before all the fuel is burnt then it has a high risk of just starting again, so they let everything burn, to let it run out of fuel, it would be different if there was a house, we would protect it and let the fire burn around it. I hope this helps you and everyonelse reading

    -- Part IV --

We never got into the "what the hell were you doing there" deal. He was hurting so we didn't want to add to it. End of story = He is fine & no one REALLY knows what was going on. The "boom" was the gas-tank of his 4-wheeler, which I went & found the next day, nearly melted into a lump of metal.

Our best guess was that he was trying to save his "patch", which over-rode any common sense he may have had. I like it occasionally too, but only when IT is burning, not ME. Stupid idiot.

    -- Part III --

I was the first to exclaim "man-made", so radio contact was immediately made to the 2 dozers. They were fine & well away from the front. None of us particuraly wanted to drive around to the other side, couldn't have done much good anyway. So we just prayed it was an old tire, tank, or something like that. 10 minutes later a local guy walks out of a small neck of woods off to the side, 2nd & 3rd degree burns on arms. We did our first-aid & called a Med-Chopper we knew was nearby.

    -- Part II --

It was burning from private land, through FS, onto COE. The private land was made safe & then after consulting, it was decided to simply doze a break about 1/2 mile downwind & let it burn. It was too fast to fight from the back & too dangerous to get in front. So we stayed in an already burnt field & watched it surge away from us, lurching several yards each jump. Even amongst the experienced, we were amazed how fast it could move. And then 2 of us heard a "boom".
