This is the first day of training after loading the clicker and doing some scent imprinting. I start out by marking and rewarding ANY behavior that is moving in the correct direction. If the dog is having difficulty searching then I reward active search behavior, if the dog is having trouble selecting the correct scent then I mark and reward any attention to the correct scent. As time goes by, we shape and evolve these by only rewarding the best 70% or 80% of the behaviors we are looking for. In this manner we can shape and evolve exactly what we desire while keeping an enthusiasic and willing worker.
Yes very similar. We use clickers, used by many professional animal trainers to mark behaviors. We also use a method we call opportunistic training, which is essentially shaping without luring. We use luring if necessary but like the results when behaviors can be observed and marked without too much handling or luring.

Is this training similar to drug sniffing training used by K9 handlers to train their dogs?
