My boyfriend had a pipe fall on his foot, and the result was a nail filled with blood that would hurt whenever it sloshed around. The whole toe nail fell off not long after.

I just had the same thing on my toe nail. I tried the hot safety pin but couldn't get through the nail. So I switched to the drill, and voila. It's really scary and painful when you poke through and feel the hot bit in your toe, but that went away after a minute or two, and I was left with relief.

Kritterkraut.. you do realize you could have used a paper clip to do that, right? Heat the end of the paper clip with a lighter, get it white hot, and press it into the nail. It will melt through the nail, painlessly, and relive the pressure immediately. Plus, there is no danger of drilling through your finger.
