On Saturday, about 20 Quincy firefighters spent nearly eight hours battling a fire in the marsh near the Broad Meadows Middle School, off Sea Street at the beginning of Houghs Neck.
Because the fire extended so far into the marsh, firefighters could not use hoses to fight much of the blaze. Homes and businesses were not in danger, but the fire department stationed equipment nearby near them in case a change in wind direction sent the fire toward them. The fire caused a traffic jam on Route 3A.
