I liked your answer about "what is a hinged log used for." I can see asking "why did you do it?" but your screen name is the answer -- finding the spirit in the wood is reason enough.

@SPIRITintheBOTTLE It has no use whatsoever, except education. You show it to kids or ppl who are interesting in how the grain flows inside a piece of wood.

how do you keep the bark on the wood, wouldnt it fall off when it dries out?

@TopOfTheLine3 It depends on the type of wood. Wood that shrinks a lot will get you into trouble, like Birch, willow and softer woods like that. Cherry on the other hand works great. There are also tricks, like saturating the bark with thinned epoxy or thinned super glue. Good luck, it takes some experimentation.
