Dir. Paul Morisson, UK, 1999, 105 mins, English, Welsh and Yiddish with English subtitles
A BAFTA award winning and Oscar nominated film about two star-crossed lovers from Welsh and Jewish backgrounds told against the backdrop of racial and industrial tension of the Welsh valleys in 1911.
A young Jewish man (Ioan Gruffudd) in 1911 South Wales tries to make his living by selling fabrics door to door, but to do so he decides he must hide his ethnicity. On one of his sales he meets and falls in love with a demure young woman (Nia Roberts) with a strong-willed father (William Thomas) and a Jew-hating anti-Semitic brother (Mark Lewis Jones). The two fall in love and she becomes pregnant, but only then does she learn of his ethnic background. When anti-Jewish riots break out, the two are forced to flee and become separated.
