Have you ever had your students (or parents, or administrators) wonder why History is being taught in schools?

I made this video to address that very question on the first day of my Social Studies class.

[Please note: I apologize for the low-quality video. Unfortunately, this is due to the quality of the original clips used. If possible, the video may look best without maximizing the view. Hopefully the message and tone is still conveyed despite the low quality footage.]

This video was made solely for use in the classroom and educational purposes.

Written and Edited by: Joanna Hayes
Music: Coldplay - Viva La Vida
Clips: History Channel, Discovery Channel, Pepsi, "Babies" trailer, Nike, CNN, AP, NBC, CBS, and archival footage

  • This video is fabulous! I'd love to show it on the first day of school but I can't embed it into a powerpoint because it "contains content from EMI." Is there a way to change this so I can embed it?

  • @sarahsiesto Glad you liked it! My kids loved it last year. It really started off the year on a good note. Unfortunately, because I used the Coldplay song it won't automatically play in PowerPoint, it seems, and I'm not sure of a work-around for this. Can you set up a link in PowerPoint so that it opens the video in the browser?

  • I watched this in my social studies class today, and everyone really liked it :D

  • @tabithajean247 I'm really glad you liked it! My students enjoyed it last year, and hopefully my new students will enjoy it when school stats up.

  • Great video! Hoping to show it to my students on the first day of school. Unfortunately You Tube is blocked at our school, so I'm trying to find a way around it. Thanks!

  • @gulfcoastteacher Have you been able to find a work-around? If you do not, I may be able to send you the raw video file. It will be a bit big but it will be doable. If you're interested, let me know!
