Jerry Seinfeld story about show business

The story is SIMPLE, Its a compare and contrast. The band is walking in the cold, wet, snow, while a family is comfortable inside. They probably got that house from a regular job that pays the bills, while the entertainers walking in the cold don't have a home and are cold, yet, this is NORMAL for them. They rather be STRUGGLING doing what they love, then be comfortably in a place they hate. Get it? Do you want to struggle to get to heaven, or be comfortable in hell?

The story is trying to convey what it feels like knowing that someones calling is in entertainment and life on the road. What they crave is to be on the road, going gig to gig. Thats the life.
Having a family, a 9-5, and a mortgage is not for everyone. And for those people, that story sums it up.
When I heard that story, I felt like that summed up what I had been feeling, but hadn't been able to put into words.

the musicians would go crazy if they would stay at home

@floydylano1 The moral is - people who live (truly live - with total commitment) show biz, can't imagine themselves doing anything else - or living any other way - "Being in showbiz is it's own reward".
Orny didn't get it (if you watch the movie you see just how much he doesn't get it).

For anyone searching for this, this is from a DVD called, "Comedian" which is a documentary-type movie about Seinfeld but also showcase Orny throughout it. It's definitely worth watching it

@Thelookoutslookout Ha, that was my point. I'm not saying the family is in hell. What I said, was that if the musicians had to have a regular lifestyle like that, they would feel like they were in hell. They like to struggle working the road/stage, because that's normal to them.

@Travesty7007 It's not that the family in the house with the fireplace are in a "hell" that they "hate"....it's just a domestic scene that seems foreign and boring to the the musicians., a lifestyle that is contrary to theirs....it's really got less to do with the family and fireplace and more to do with what the musicians want for themselves.

So true, Jerry is such a pro and makes it look easy people forget it's an act and it's tough.
-
jerry is a class act, this story should be told to all artists or just about anybody following their dreams who are thinking about quitting and taking the comfortable, well trodden path instead of continuing on with their dreams.

This is masterful storytelling by Jerry. I disagree with the comments slamming
Orry. He asks an honest question and gets a great answer. This is one of the best
scenes of THe COmedian. The veteran teaches the rookie.
Thanks for posting!
can someone please explain this?? i dont get what he means by saying "how do people live like this"
thanks

I think within the context of the story the man who said that only knows living a life on the road. He's out with this band in a different city every night and doesn't see the Norman Rockwell scene as something he wants to live by. I dunno, thats what I get out of it, I hope that helps explain it.
