The Mauser C-96 Broomhandle Pistol is so called because of the shape of its grip. It was the world's first successful semi automatic pistol and is unusual in having its magazine located in front of the trigger guard, and it is loaded by means of stripper clips in the manner of Mauser rifles. There are no pins in its construction and the only screw secures the grip panels. The parts all fit together like a puzzle. Rather than a slide, it has a bolt which reciprocates in the receiver. It is a locked breech, short recoil design. The cartridge is the 7.63 Mauser, or 7.63 x 25. It was used as the design basis for Han Solo's phaser in the Star Wars movies. The example shown is of the "Bolo" variation, which was made after WW -I, in accordance with the restrictions of the Treaty of Versailles, which limited barrel length. This example is one of the many which were imported from China in the late 1980's and was in miserable condition. Its barrel has been relined and it has been reblued. It is lots of fun.
