People of these regions have not always been Dominionists. Most were relieved to be truly relieved of politics. However, government operatives have a deep interest in the rallying power of American Christianity. WWI brought a bond selling, flag rallying, Germany hating religion of "patriotism" to the forefront. With no more frontier left to pillage America joined in to fight the "baby eating Germans". Dionne is right. If the religious right had the same level of influence, Guliani, Huckabee or Romney would have been the Republican nominee. Instead an experienced Washington politician has won it.
