Abraham Lincoln himself made crystal clear on a number of occasions that the war was not about slavery - in 1862, he stated
"My paramount object in this struggle is to save the Union, and not either to save or to destroy slavery. If I could save the Union without freeing any slave, I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves, I would do it; and if I could do it by freeing some and leave others alone, I would also do it."

The Republican Party was founded on the principle that slavery could not expand into the territories (a position held by most because they believed that slave labor undercut opportunities for white laborers, not because they thought slavery was wrong). Furthermore, the Emancipation Proclamation wasn't issued until 1863, two years after the civil war had begun, and it didn't free slaves in the border states, which hadn't seceded from the union (that didn't happen til after the war ended)

Dude, if you're going to make ad hominem attacks and call someone a moron, at least get your terminology and facts straight. The pursuit of happiness being code word for property is pretty much basic knowledge, so I imagine that Matt Damon, having gone to Harvard, would know that.
That said, did you know that Abraham Lincoln didn't move to abolish slavery, and furthermore that was not what started the civil war?
