Judokas train, in good clubs, rigorously and throw their resistant opponents at full force. I have been in confrontations myself and seen others get badly hurt in pure street fights. When one is smashed fast and hard is not a joke. The victim could be crippled, suffer a concussion and or back, head shoulder injuries depending on the throw. Striking is also easier for the thrower who would finish you off fast and hard.

@JudokaJames You are on the right track; recently they eliminated leg grabbing and some other throws. In kata, however, everything could be practiced. A misunderstood fact is that sport Judo is no so viable for self-defense. Now, I would say that it's NOT true at all.
-
@JudokaJames Absolutely, some underestimate Judo with no foundation whatsoever. The entire system of Judo encompasses a whole range of throws, strangles, joint locks, strikes even kicks; some of which have eliminated from Olympic sport Judo by the IJF.

No, its pretty confirmed. Watch fight science. The force generated by an uchi mata is ridiculous. If a good judoka throws someone on pavement or wood or any hard surface with that, unless they are an experienced fighter that is used to taking pain they are toast. And even then, its much different than a good judo throw in mma, where there is no clothes to grab onto and there is a mat to land on. The hard surface of a street and the added leverage from grabbing clothes = HARD
-
@JudokaJames so untrue.
-
I'd even say higher than 75%. Someone lands on any hard surface from an uchi mata or a harai or a seoi, or even a basic footsweep, and they are toast even if they know how to break their fall. Serious leverage and power.

@Lechelover yes but we have to give credit to the fact that MMA is the combat sport that has come the closest to a real fight scenario. it is still miles away from an actual fight, but it is also miles past any other combat sport we have seen so far.

A lot of people are starting to utilize Judo moves in MMA. Wrestling has been the primary grappling system utilized by most MMA guys and the single/double leg takedowns are getting to be outdated and boring. Judo is more effective within a clinch because of the leg sweeps, trips, throws, etc ... it's quick and unexpected and that's the power of judo. Leben said that Akiyama is not a world class wrestler and he won't be able to take him down ... well, Akiyama took Leben down like 5 times... JUDO!
mike and matt, that would be an awesome randori session to watch

What does a situation in "the street" and MMA have to do with one another? A self defense situation vs. an intense physical sport? The UFC is NOT the "end all of martial arts". Its an incredibly intense sport, full of talented competitors. In the street? The Judo guy would walk away from it and the MMA fighter could go to jail for 1) beating the person to a pulp 2) labeled legally as a "psychopath" for lack of self control. The ring allows for anti-social behavior, society does not. Different
