Ambassador Carol Rodley is probably more aware of Khmer culture and more fluent in Khmer language than most Khmers, especailly those living abroad. As for the Khmers in Cambodia a high percentage are illiterate and are not educated about their own culture and history, so they learn a lot of misinformation through oral history and rhetoric that they claim as facts.

This video shows that Carol Rodley is more aware of Cambodian culture than typical US diplomats. For this ceremony she chose to present rare gifts of American scholarship on Cambodian history to King Sihamoni. I've read that she speaks and continues to study Khmer and is truly interested in Khmer culture. I hope she represents a positive new direction for Cambodia and the US to work together.
