The process of evolution through natural selection is the focus of this video for high school students, which presents a field study of hummingbird speciation in Ecuador. The research of Chris Schneider is advancing our knowledge of evolution through his study of natural selection in hummingbird populations at various elevations.

  • @pamelaaffronti the hummingbird will never change completely into another animal in its lifetime or in the future. the only way we know for a species to split apart is complete isolation of two groups. if the two groups cant mate and mingle DNA, then they are both new species even though there may not be alot of difference (ie. cats and tigers). in some cases, being fit helps, but it sure as hell didnt for the dinosaurs. being more adaptable to change however seems to work. hope this helps :)

  • 2 theists watched this.

  • @pamelaaffronti

"fitness" is a function of genetics

  • This is interesting, Natural selection is great because it happens fairly quickly and is observable. I still don't understand how a hummingbird could change into a completely different animal because of adaptation though. It seems like it's survival of the fittest, not that the genetic make up is changing.Just wondering outloud

  • Everyone should understand at *least* this much about evolution

  • very interesting

  • Cool Moar people should watch this ....
