One of the seven decorative souvenir cannon I've bought in Bonn, Germany. It has been modified to be fully functionnal. Carefull steps has also been taken for the precise amount of explosive charge.
This shot has been "fused" with thick tape for precaution.
Each explosive charge are designed in a way to load the cannon with more ease and faster. The grapeshot case has been conceived to fire 175 bits of steel and has been improved in a way to stack down more power and to spread out exactly at desired location.
Each 0.85 gram of gunpowder charge requires an amount 0.32 euro/shot.
Grapeshot ammunition costs no more than 0.2 euro/shot.
The anti-recoil system, shown here is a basic grip to the ground, it is the only one prooved to be practical on both precision and use.
Yet another complicated system of grips enables the cannon for a firm position, however it does not permit to move it in any ways easily and the cannon is still tends to rip off the ground despite it.
In this video, the cannon completely bended the hooks off the ground and flew 2.50 meters backwards. By this immense recoil, two major problems are still present where I'm still trying to resolve :
-An angle adjuster for pin-point precision
-An easily dismountable anti-recoil system
Altough projectiles do not have much mass, they do have enough perforating power to pierce trough the wooden cigar box.
And on second hand, notice the velocity is so great that it barely tilted the light-weighted cigar box on impact point.
The target was 4 meters afar from the cannon, but projectile traces are found up to 16 meters down range.
Most leaves in front of the line of fire got pierced. One small branch got cracked down.
Out of the 175, only 4 bits have been recovered whereas the majority is estimated to be sticked down into the ground or ricocheted off-course on hard objects like bricks.

  • I tried that using shotgun pellets and powder with a green firecracker wick...damn thing blew up!

  • Working steam engine :O That does sound interesting, and dangerous.

  • nice!

  • I'm getting started right now, uncharted territory!

Ironclad you say? Is this an early battleship :) ?

  • I just got myself some de-thermaliser fuse, it burns slow and steady, AND can be seperated into many tiny strands! I hope to use some to set off a tiny machine gun (with caps inside) on a flying biplane.
