Learn to make your own dog food from Trudy Pachon. Trudy has been making her own dog food since 2007. She has found that by making your own food you can avoid the questionable ingredients of factory produced products and give your dogs a food tailored to their unique needs. It is also better for the environment since the ingredients can be locally produced and have lighter shipping weights, no chemicals are used, and no pollution is produced in the manufacturing. You can choose organic and vegan ingredients so there is less waste of resources and pollution associated with the meat and pesticide industry.
Over the past 15,000 years the domesticated dogs has been helping us to clean up our food scraps. Not until just recently (mid-1800s) was commercial dog food made available to the masses. Today almost all the dogs in the US are feed one commercial brand or another.
While this may seem more convenient it separates us from having control of what ingredients go into our best friends meals. Many of the ingredients in commercial dog food are unrecognizable or vague, ingredients like chicken meal; meat by-products and crude protein are code for animal parts deemed not suitable for human consumption. The rules regarding the source of these ingredients are pretty loose. For example the ingredient "animal fat" is obtained from animal rendering facilities. The rendered animals can be obtained from any source, so there is no control over quality or contamination. Any kind of animal can be included: "4-D animals" (dead, diseased, disabled, or dying prior to slaughter), goats, pigs, horses, rats, miscellaneous road kill, dogs and cats euthanized at shelters, zoo animals, restaurant and supermarket refuse and so on. By-products are also rendered in the same way, and from the same sources.
If the ingredients that they are allowed to put in aren't bad enough you may remember the stories of pet food contaminated with melamine in 2007 that killed many beloved pets. The chemicals, transportation, and animal products used in commercial dog food make it an environmental concern as well. Add to these horrors the inhumane animal testing many of these companies do on dogs and cats and you may find yourself at a moral crossroads. What ever are we going to do to get away from the nightmare of factory made pet food?
How about making your own dog food with wholesome human grade ingredients? I did a bunch of research in to making your own dog food and I have been cooking up a batch of dog food for my little darlings for the past year that is custom made for their optimal health.
Here's my recipe.
Baxter's dog food recipe
1-cup lentils
1-cup brown rice
4 cups water
¼ cup canola or olive oil
½ cup nutritional yeast
¼ cup flaxseed meal
1 sweet potato (chopped)
1 zucchini (chopped)
1 carrot (chopped)
Place all ingredients in a large pan and cover. Bring to a boil, and then simmer for about one hour to break it down well. Let cool before serving. Can be stored in refrigerator for up to five days and served cold. I often add a little flax seed oil on top of the food before I serve it to them. It makes their coats very shiny!! We store it in the refrigerator and feed them once daily.
We also add Vegedog multivitamin to their meals each night. You can find it at several online pet stores.
You may add any (exceptions below) vegetable and even fruit you like to add variety to your dog's food. They enjoy trying new things too and it supplies them with different nutrients!
Optional ingredients:
• Celery
• Broccoli
• Kale (high in calcium, nutritious)
• Spinach
• Cantaloupe
• Bananas
• Soy (can cause allergies so if you notice the do scratching or licking its paws try removing this ingredient)
• Other grains can be used too.
Avoid adding corn, it has low digestibility in dogs, and is not very nutritious
Never give your dog these things:
• Grapes (very toxic)
• Raisins (very toxic)
• Macadamia nuts
• Avocado (fruit is OK, pits are not!!)
• Large quantities of broccoli (small amounts are OK)
• Onions and Garlic (again small amount is OK, but be careful here)
• Bones (this is a choking hazard)

Bone appetite!
Glad your watching this video and considering cooking wholesome food for your dog. Most commercial dog food contains ingredients you would not give to your worst enemy.
