2011, february 3rd.

Karine Deshayes made her role debut as Charlotte in Werther in Lyon, January and february of 2011. I found her to be the most exquisite and moving Charlotte I ever saw, though I had a vivid remembrance of Koch's performance @ the Paris Opera. The emotion was incredible during the whole act III.

Here is her second aria in the third act, Va! Laisse couler mes larmes. The music is just so powerful here...

Direction musicale : Leopold Hager
Mise en scène : Rolando Villazòn
Décors : François Séguin
Costumes : Thibault Vancraenenbroeck
Lumières : Wolfgang Goebbel
Mise en mouvement : Nola Rae

Arturo Chacon-Cruz : Werther
Karine Deshayes : Charlotte
Lionel Lhote : Albert
Alain Vernhes : Le Bailli
Anne-Catherine Gillet : Sophie
Jean-Paul Fouchécourt : Schmidt
Nabil Suliman : Johann
Marie-Laure Cloarec : Kätchen
Grégory Escolin : Bruhlmann
Orchestre et Maîtrise de l'Opéra de Lyon

Va! Laisse couler mes larmes!
elles font du bien, ma chérie !
Les larmes qu'on ne pleure pas
Dans notre âme retombent toutes,
et de leurs patientes gouttes
Martèlent le cœur triste et las.
Sa résistance enfin s'épuise;
le cœur se creuse et s'affaiblit;
il est trop grand, rien ne l'emplit;
et trop fragile, tout le brise!

  • mise en scene Rolando Villazon?

  • yes, I was, for the opening night and for the last one! I actually noticed some changes (, minus ones,) I loved this extraordinary new outlook which opened imagination and freed the character of Charlotte. And Karine Deshayes in this production is the best Charlotte I have ever seen.
