Part 1 of 2

Video shot October 30, 2009 from on board Amtrak's Empire Builder as it passes through Fargo, North Dakota and Moorhead, Minnesota. When they're on time, both east and westbound Empire Builders travel through this area very early in the morning when most passengers are attempting to sleep.

Scanner audio was recorded using a scanner hooked up to a voice recorder set to go off only upon the transmittance of sound. Select portions of the recording were dubbed into the video during post-processing.

  • One thing that will make the night better is bringing a pillow from home, as the ones provided by Amtrak are rather small and thin. A small blanket might also be good in the winter or if you get cold easily. The cars can get to 60° or so at night.

If your trip is longer than one night, I would seriously consider upgrading to a roomette. One night in coach can be fine, but any more could be a bit much. Besides a bed to lay down in, you would also get all your meals paid for in the dining car.

  • I guess it depends on how easily you can sleep sitting up. Seats in coach are pretty roomy (much more leg room than in an airplane), but they don't recline very far and if you're in an aisle seat, there's no real good place to rest your head. If you travel during the off-peak periods, though, you can often get a row of two seats to yourself, and in such a case you can find a way to stretch your legs on both seats and rest your head on the window. That can be pretty pleasant.
