This contest is being uploaded on request. I only wish there were more vidoes of this aria. I have seven, not a very large collection, but there is some good and even wonderful singing to be sure! Again a score of 1-5 for singing/characterization:
Emma Matthews - 2006
Desiree Rancatore - 2003
Elizabeth Futral - 1996
Natalie Dessay - 1995
Mado Robin - 1957
Roberta Peters - 1961
Joan Sutherland - 1967

  • I'm 99% certain this is Emma Matthews, not Leanne Kenneally. They shared the role: Emma sang it in Melbourne, Leanne in Sydney. This looks and sounds a whole lot more like Emma than Leanne.

  • I was told this was from Sydney, and this is the name that was listed in the cast. Of course, using a tape like this, I am not certain. I would like to know for sure.

  • Dispite the poor sound, her voice still shines through. The way she hits the top notes without screaming is truly amazing.

    Tolstow.

  • lovely!! had not been excited by this aria "recently" since Dessay.

It's a pity there's not much material form Matthews on youtube.

  • what a beautiful rembeption of this aria! just love it! brava veramente. or it suposed to be in french? lol

  • This is DEFINITELY Emma Matthews.

  • Die Emma ist gut,, aber an Natalie Dessay kann sie mit "Lakme" noch nicht anknüpfen.

I have had the immense pleasure of watching Emma Matthews perform many roles for Opera Australia. She's wonderful--and I agree that there is too little of her on YouTube or DVD. Opera Australia productions and singers are better than any I have seen in the UK or Europe.

  • A really wonderful voice. One of the best. Pure, and bell-like with superb diction. Charming stage presence. She will be one of the 'the greats'

  • Hopefully she wont end up with the same plum in the throat sound Joan had in the end

  • Me too steinwaygrande1 ! I wrote down her name straight away - she has a beautiful voice!
