This shows the USS Sacramento AOE-1 shows at sea replenishment. The USS Sacramento AOE-1 is the first of this type of ship, a Fast Combat Support Ship. It replaces 3 ships in its ability to deliver goods to other Naval vessels by carrying Ammunition, Fuel, Fresh & Frozen products.
While being able to carry all these items, it can maintain speeds to allow aircraft carrier to launch and recover aircraft while conducting replenishment at sea operations.
The USS Sacramento AOE-1 carried Chinook helicopters to assist in Vertical Replenishment moving supplies from ship to ship.
At times replenishment details went continually for over 24 hours servicing a carrier task group. In the 8 month deployment of the USS Sacramento AOE-1 in 1965, she received 813 ships along side for replenishment.

Reels 1,2, 3 & 4 were taken by me, when I was stationed aboard the USS Sacramento AOE-1 in 1965 off the coast of Viet Nam.

  • I was in the Hydro Shop, which was located on the winch deck, I was doing some paper work when the alarm went off & had everyone go to the starboard sid of the shop. What a lot of work we had to do to get her back to unrep ready. Thank good no one got hurt. Still miss a lot of that stuff.

  • It was great to see this Haze Grey Ghost again. It was such a huge honor and privledge to serve aboard the Sac. I will cherish those memories for the rest of my natural life. I can still see her crystal clear in my minds eye and it brings such feelings of pride instantly back to me.

  • I was on the Sac and the Lincoln hit us. The Lincoln was the one that got off course and over compensated trying to get back on. And most of us were not mad. We got to stay in port and go out on liberty.

  • I miss her, PSNS and even Bremerton. The Sac was a time in my life where life was hard but worth all the work.

  • There is a web site called navybuddies where you can connect with other shipmates from the Sac. Joe Almendarez is organizing a reunion for October of this year. July 15 is the deadline for reserving your spot in the hotel at special rates.
