THE KAMIKAZES OF WORLD WAR II "A world without strife will come only when every man has learned to curb his desires. Assuming that the strongest of these is man's desire to live, you may say that this desire cannot be governed. Therefore, if our wish is for a peaceful world, it will be well to study the spirit of the Kamikaze pilots." - Captain Inoguchi I have always been very interested in the Japanese warrior culture, especially the men who committed the ultimate acts of sacrifice; the Kamikazes. Although the word "Kamikaze" was never actually used by the Japanese military during the war, I will use it here simply for its world-wide recognition. The suicide attack formations of the Japanese Army and Navy took on many different forms, using many different techniques, but all with the same goal; to win the war through physical and spiritual sacrifice. Their bravery in WII was perhaps only equaled by the American sailors who had to fight against them. One US Navy sailor lauded the Kamikazes as, "Suicide at its best." Because of the absolute extremeness of these elite combat units, the mystique of the Kamikazes has become almost impossible to break through over 55 years later. I am not so much concerned with the who, what, where, when or how of history, but rather with the all-important, why? For this brief history of the Kamikaze Special Attack Corps, I have had to rely completely on secondary sources, so this information represents the limitations of my research. However, I believe the most important documents pertaining to the Kamikazes are the last letters and diaries written by the men themselves, right before they took off on their missions. Working with two different translations of the same Japanese book, I edited the most interesting parts from the much longer letters and included them at the end. My main purpose in making this website is to let the Kamikazes speak for themselves as no one else's opinion really matters. The following is a brief introduction that only serves to hit the main points and set the scene. For those wishing to explore the complete history of the Kamikazes in English, I recommend the books in the bibliography. "Japan's suicide squadrons have become universally known as the Kamikaze (Divine Wind: originally the typhoon that destroyed a Mongol invasion fleet in the 13th century). This term has rarely been used in Japan: it is a rendering, with pejorative overtones of foolish or reckless behavior, of the Sino-Japanese characters with the same meaning but with the more dignified transliteration of Shimpu. The first official suicide units of the Imperial Japanese Navy were known as Shimpu Tokubetsu Kogekitiai (Divine Wind Special Attack Force). This was frequently abbreviated to Tokko-Tai (Special attack Force).

  • Yes, I call it bravery.

That wasn't brainwashing. They died for their country and families, not for the nation, not for the emperor.

  • You think like this because you aren't Japanese.

To them, die for the homeland was like protect their parents and brothers. Opposing to the imminent invasion og Japan by the allied forces.
