Song For Youth was written by Christopher Binns in 1985 for International Youth Year.
It was first performed in November 1985 by the Ovenden School Choir accompanied by Brighouse and Rastrick Band and subsequently in December 1985 with Black Dyke Mills Band on each occasion at the Halifax Civic Theatre. It was also recorded in December for a Christmas Eve broadcast by BBC Radio Leeds in a further concert at the same theatre, this time with a youth choir of over 400 singers and a 100 strong band, all being pupils from north Halifax schools.
In June 1986, this time with Ovenden School and the band and choir from North Halifax High School, it was broadcast on YTV as the finale to "Sounds Good" presented by Roger Greenwood and Carol Mather (later Vorderman). Subsequently, the song has been performed widely, especially by mass bands and choirs.
The combined choirs of Savile Park School, Copley School and Bolton Brow Primary Academy, accompanied by Halifax Concert Band, will perform it as the finale to their concert at Halifax Minster on Thursday 15th December at 7pm.
Parents who were part of the original "Sounds Good" performance in 1986 will be there to see their children singing it 25 years on.
Composer Christopher Binns will conduct the band and his daughter Catherine will play piano and lead the choirs.
