Soundtrack: Georgi Vinogradov sings "Do not stir up memories" by P. Bulahov, Moscow pre-1951.

Video: Portable steam engine at Home Farm, Beamish Museum, Durham, powers a wood-cutting machine.

The semi-octagonal building in the background is a gin gang: housing for a horse-mill. A horse-mill was late 18th or early 19th century wooden gearing powered by a horse to turn a shaft which transferred power from the gin gang to the adjacent barn. In the barn, drive belts were taken off the turning shaft to power threshing machines, winnowing machines and other farm machinery through the winter.

However, by the 1930s steam power was beginning to take over from horse power, and after about 1845 virtually no new gin gangs were built. So there is nostalgia for both the horse mill and the steam power. And the attitude of the little boy says it all.

  • Technologies come and go, but a classic never goes out of style! A case in point,

is Georgi Vinogradov's brilliant artistry. Voices as unique and filled with expressive

character as Vinogradov's are unforgettable! Here, his usual elegance, other-

worldly beauty, and restraint gives way to a more intense, grainy sound. Still

the emotional truth of this wonderful old romance prevails in Vinogradov's superb

    singing. Thank you, Linda!

  • What a voice! Thank you for posting.

  • Thank you for this! I've noticed that Vinogradov's voice sounds a bit different in this performance... Very good old Russian romance song!

  • Very neat--although the Youtube system has confused the gin gang reference with Ging Gang Goolie, by The Scaffold, amongst others. Oh dear...

  • This is beautiful ... just beautiful!

    Thank you for sharing!
