Margaret Atwood, Canada's premier poet and novelist, has turned to nonfiction. Her latest--and timely--book is "Payback: Debt and the Shadow Side of Wealth." Atwood talks to Allan Gregg about her investigation into the economic and social history of debt, a concept as old as commerce.

  • She is so cool as well. Goes without saying. I appreciate that you have uploaded this. Thanks.

  • I bought the Massey Lectures AND bought the paperback and I have to say, WITHOUT a DOUBT they are the best, absolute best, thing I have heard/ read in the past year. May I recommend that people listen to a series of things to get a GREAT picture of what Margaret Atwood is trying to say,

    1) The series of lectures on YouTube, THE MOST IMPORTANT VIDEO YOU'LL EVER SEE. An account of exponential population growth on the planet.

2)PAYBACK (book or audio) by Margaret Atwood

    3)Oryx and Crake

    Thanks

  • The key word in this crisis, is not debt, but FRAUD. William K Black lays this aspect of the crisis out very well.

This is not to say debt is not a problem, especially personal & corporate debt.

Steve Keen & Michael Hudson lay this out in detail and were among the first to predict the housing crisis in precise detail (chart, graphs and figures)

  • Her books are high falutin' and elitist, very bookish.

    Boring.

  • I listened to Howard Zinn on CBC (yes CBC) I think it was Gian Gomeshi (so sorry for the spelling) it was a long time ago but I was so entralled by the objectivity and observation of Howard. And now listening to this I am again enthralled. I expect nothing but articulate and tasteful retorts. No swearing! You'll just prove your not interested or engaged.

  • awesome awesome awesome "oh btw im a rabbit scorpio and its an interesting combination to my nature" you're fucking shitting me why would you go and blow an awesome talk with bringing in something as stupid as that?

  • This woman is the meaning HAWT.

  • Wow she's old... Still pretty cool though :D

  • @alanna4858 Not really sure what you're talking about there. I read Oryx and Crake, which is in the list. I can't believe a 70 year old woman wrote it. A spectacular novel.

  • I actually saw her lecture about Payback at University of Toronto. The Three Stooges analogy was great.
