The Carretera Central is Cuba's main road, a highway that crosses the country from east to west. The length is 1.250 km. Driving there is a weird experience since there are hardly cars to be seen - on a six lane highway! Watch yourself.

It´s building started in 1927, but it was later on largely extended by the Soviets. To those who might be interested in the road´s history, I recommend this article:

  • this is actually the new Mayabeque Province, at the end of the video around 1:55, the building that star top appear its called ISCA, in the municipality of San Jose De Las Lajas, My cousin worked there, i use to live around that area.

  • @odlastem Wow!!! That was a really authentic post. Thanks!

  • It´s normal construction began in 1927 during the Gerardo Machado administration. It was finished by Castro though.

  • Cuba is a big country but not as developed as other countries in the Caribbean. The U.S. Embargo and Communism has made this country fall between the cracks. It doesn't matter how big Cuba is, Cities are very impoverish and not as developed as other Spanish Countries in the Caribbean. Dominican Republic has two beautiful cities that are well developed, and Puerto Rico has 78 well developed cities, and Barbados is a small country with more progress and development than Cuba.

  • @orquideasbellas

Fine. However, let´s define "developed" though!

  • This is the "Autopista Nacional," rather than the older "Carretera Central" o "Via Blanca"...still, not much traffic...like the Taconic State Parkway for its final sixty miles north of Poughkeepsie, to its end @ the Mass Pike. Thanks for posting. I have often traveled it, both on ViAzul buses, rental cars, and taxis particulares. Where is this? Looks like somewhere east of Habana, in the new Mayabeque Province, or perhaps in Matanzas. Michael. Guilford, VT

You´re pretty right. It´s somewhere between Santa Clara and Havana. Can´t remember exactly.

  • Did Batista built this highway or Castro finished it?

  • If you've ever taken the Autopista Nacional west, to Pinar del Rio, it looks a whole lot better; with great lanscaping you'd almost think you were in the States...except for, LOL, the occasional donkey- or horse-cart clopping along in the break-down lane! I enjoyed a one-day visit to Saroa and Las Terazas, via a Gaviota bus tour from Habana, all for the princely sum of $16 CUC's (which included (a) deluxe tour bus from/to Habana, (b) nice lunch @ riverside restaurant (c) tour of Las Terazas!

  • Oh God, what a poor country
