cabin project part 3: fireplace

Part 3 of an ongoing series documenting the building of a cabin on a tree farm. This part illustrates the beginning stages of an antique cast iron fireplace install. I focus mainly on tile layout on this video.

The next video will show how I run the class A chimney pipe from the ceiling joists through the roof.

A couple of notes on the video:
The tiles on the floor are placed on a modified thinset directly over the 3/4" plywood subfloor. Since the walls are OSB, there is 1/4" hardibacker cement board screwed to the walls, then the tiles are placed (OSB is not a suitable substrate for tile).

Thanks. I started this earlier this year (2009). Although I have had some help with the heavy lifting items like roof structure, I'm mostly doing this myself on spare weekends. I hope to finish in 2010.

Awesome job. The only think I can offer is that you need to remember that tile offers no heat/fire protection. Heat goes through it like its not there. I used to sell custom wood stoves in northern Minnesota and saw many fires because of it. I would had to see you loose you place. Stay thirsty my friend!

Did you check on having a pipe stand welded and placed under stove?

Is the cabin large enough for 2 or is it just for your self?

Do you have electric or did you go solar/wind or hydro?

Please post more videos with the inside and outside finished..
