hui, kirgiz, northern han, kazakh, mongols have existed in xinjiang before uighurs settled in part of the region. they have as much claim to the region as uighurs. most prefer to be united with china. in fact many are practising muslims without the separatist/extremist element.

Btw a year ago hungarians were demonstrating for the independence of East Turkestan and Tibet, but some foreighner chinese activists attacked them in the street in the front of the policemen! That is the manner of the chinese goverment in the 21th century.
