  • Atoms are not destroyed, they are split with nuclear fission under certain conditions such as having Uranium or Plutonium metal in a critical mass. Matter is not destroyed under normal conditions, it is converted into something else like other elements including the release of neutrons, x-rays and other rays. Nuclear chemistry differs from regular chemistry in that it deals with the electrons which orbit the atom. Nuclear chemistry deals with the nucleus of the atom with none destoryed.
