@Emperorpenguinonline Uhmmm... the "a" of top is a bit longer than the one of far. It's more like the "a" of bother or father. Actually in standard AE there ain't no father-
bother merger.

thanks so much for posting this video. i am a native english speaker who teaches many ESOL students and I find that sometimes it's hard to really break it down and make it clear how to pronounce the short vowel sounds because I don't think about it, it just comes naturally to me when i'm speaking. very helpful!

@AKVR19 But the idea isn't always to recognize the right word by context.

@Emperorpenguinonline I have the same problem when it comes identifying which vowel sound is pronounced between 2 that are almost alike, I hear them like if they were the same, in my case, the vowels that I don't distinct from the each other are in the words GOT & GUT i guess I might get confused when I hear those ones individually, maybe a context could help me know what word is said.

@Emperorpenguinonline No, the sounds are slightly different... When the letter 'r' follows a vowel, it often changes the quality of the vowel sound. These are called r-controlled vowels. I haven't created a specific 'ar' sound video, yet, but I do touch on it a little with the 'schwa+r' video. You can find that video from our channel page, or you can find more information on our website.
Thanks!
