you are right. real estate is a derivation of royal estate. you can own your home, you can own the rights to property, you can pass the property rights over to someone else, you can profit off the property. the test for ownership is when you dont have to pay for something and it remains yours. i can buy a car and stop paying ad valorm tax and the car remains mine. i can "buy" property and stop paying prop tax and it returns to the true owner.

1 im not trying to be rude 2 i am republican and i like as few taxes as possible but heres my answer - FIRST the point of taxes is so that the government can provide for its citizens SECOND citizens ow that money because they are using the services EX roads, education, free speech SO even in your extreme example the person living on there own can do so because they have the freedom to in the united states and are not forced to work and are also are getting protection by the armed forces

High taxes in other countries compared to the US, is a bit different, in that they have LOTS of social programs and a very comprehensive public transportation. So the money doe get put to good use, and people "believe" their government is not wasting their money. In the US, we KNOW the government is wasting our money, and don't see much return for it, so there is great cause to complain and not want to pay a penny more. I have been to 23 different countries, and the US is the best!

You pay property taxes because the municipality in which you live uses the money to fund maintenance of roads, police and fire protection, schools etc. Also money on sales tax goes to fund these amenities. So, ,if you want to live in your own house this is a small price to pay for living in a modern society. People who rent also pay for these services because the owner of the property has calculated all his costs (incl property taxes) into your rental contract.

In the UK we had property tax for a short period of time but it proved very very unpopular and was later withdrawn. We do however pay council tax.

@cutlerylover I understand the point you're trying to make. And to that end, bear in mind that other countries are far worse in their taxation. Go to Germany, the Netherlands or any country in Scandinavia to find out what high taxes are really like. Then visit Brazil, Russia, Romania or Syria and see what a truly corrupt government looks like. I'm not saying the U.S. is perfect. But many do not know how good they have it here. We are truly blessed to live in this country, problems and all.

Hey jeff upon this topic I think it is good to ask. I want you to fly the Gadsden Flag in your background.
I am not stating my opinion on what I think of taxation. I'm simply pointing out that your logic is flawed:
You are wrong. Taxes don't = debt.
Taxes are levied to keep the government running. Debt is money borrowed to purchase a good or service. Paying taxes on what you own doesn't mean the government owns it. If you paid a mortgage or rent to the government, that would mean it owned the property.

@mz9393mz "You are wrong. Taxes don't = debt."
what would you call owing someone money for something every year for the rest of your life with no chance to stop paying?
