We shot this clip while set up directly above the east portal of Hermosa Tunnel.

You can see one train coming down off the hill and through Dale Junction. Another train is coming off the Harriman Cut off to rejoin the main line.

You're probably seeing about 2 miles out to Dale.

  • Excuse me. "Hermen" cutoff? Did you mean "Harriman"?

I figured you'd know some of the key characters in UP history.

  • Forgive the typo. It'll be changed in the info of the video for future viewings.

As the for the UP history and my knowledge of it, I do know my piece of it but I'm no scholar to it. Most of what I know comes from my father and reading. Just because I didn't spell it correctly it shouldn't make you think I don't know some of UPs key characters.

At least I didn't say "Another train is coming off the branch line to the right to rejoin the main line."

  • Wow, that is really cool being able to watch a train snake towards you from that far off.

  • This video doesn't do it justice. It's wild country and you can see for miles.

If you ever have the time and opportunity make the trip there. It's worth it!

  • It is the highest point on UP's original transcontinental line:

Sherman Hill Summit - 8,015 MSL (from their website)

    Cheyenne - 6,062 MSL

So, it's just short of a 2,000 foot climb for westbound trains in 35 miles, about a 1.1% ruling grade.

The highest point on the active UP is on the former DRGW at Alamosa, CO - 9,242'. Tennesee Pass is no longer used (DRGW), and that was at 10,221'. Moffat Tunnel is at 9,239', also legacy DRGW.

  • boy those are some cool Dash 8s.

  • I believe it's the highest point on the UP but don't quoat me on that.
