The eruption of a volcano in Iceland in April 2010 spewed a volcanic ash cloud over much of Europe, grounding airlines and stranding passengers.

Among the many thousands unable to travel were South African authors and publishers due to have flown to London for the 2010 London Book Fair which had chosen South African literature as its focus.

On the first day of the book fair, publishers and authors gathered at the Book Lounge in Cape Town to celebrate the spirit of the book fair and offer messages of support to those in London.
