I'm actually nearly completely fluent in Chinese, and am totally self taught. I only watch these programmes for a bit of fun. I learned to read and write Chinese fluently in 3 months. My dream is to live in China for the rest of my life.
Learning Chinese requires structure and time. I personally don't think a course like this is particularly useful.
you'll find this with a lot of programmes that Dashan makes about learning Chinese. For example in one programme he was teaching the phrase "ni neng bang wo mai le liang zhang piao ma?" (sorry I can't write characters on my computer).
This sentence is quite advanced, but he still had to explain that "zhang" is a measure word for pieces of paper. Something which is very basic.
wow it's the reverse invasion

Nobody can read and write Chinese fluently after 3 months!

well then, may be you know better :)
actually how fast you learn some language depends on many factors: how much time you devote to it, some personal ability on learning languages, etc.
But most important factor, IMO, is age. You'll never learn a language within 3 months if you're at age of 50.
As for this particular lesson, I find it quite useful. It's not basic but it is useful...
88! :)

before this "sports chinese" there was also a series "communicating chinese" which is rather basic!
so you just select your learning level and be fine.
however, learning with complicated phrases from the very beginning could bring you to the final result faster
