Rikki Dunsmore, Resource Protection Specialist, Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary

Rikki Dunsomore, Ecosystem-Based Management Initiative Coordinator for the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, explains the science behind MPAs including what they are, the different types of MPAs, their benefits, and how they work. This presentation was given during a one-day workshop held in early 2011 for docents and state park staff. The workshop was designed to increase the understanding and awareness of the benefits of California's network of MPAs and provide tools for communicating with the public. The Monterey Bay Sanctuary Foundation is a non-profit organization that is organizing the Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) Education and Outreach Initiative along with other non-profit, state, and federal organizations. The MPAs Education and Outreach Initiative is developing educational resources including products and programs to educate the public about California's landmark effort to establish a statewide network of MPAs.
