The President recalled the invitation extended to all those who had left the country due to terrorism, to return. The country is experiencing a historic era. It should be a historic juncture for the tourism industry as well. Ancient ruins and cultural features would prove to be the resources when tourism flourishes. Nature would be a blessing. He added that nothing should be limited to achieve profits or monetary gains.
Governments target is to attract more than three million tourists by the year 2016. The initial required programme has been drawn up. Action will be initiated to extend financial assistance and other facilities to develop the industry. Kalpitiya, Hambantota and Arugam Bay will be improved as Tourism Zones. Another plan is to suitably develop the coastal belt from Pasekudah to Kokilai. This effort will be undertaken through the Eastern Reawakening and the Uthuru Wasanthaya programme.
Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickramanayake, who was the Chief Guest at this event said the Government has unveiled the operation to uplift the development sector which was paralysed by terrorism. Five new stamps were also issued. Minister Milinda Moragoda and Deputy Minister Faizer Mustapha were the other speakers.
